Japan-China trade remains stalled The Japanese government says China’s tightened customs inspections for imports and exports for Japan after last month’s maritime collisions are stalling trade in rare earth metals, automotive parts and electronic goods. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry conducted a survey of Japanese trading firms and manufacturers between September 28th and the 30th. China tightened export procedures for rare earth metals bound for Japan after the collisions. Of the 424 companies that replied, 124, or about 30 percent, reported delays in customs procedures. A customs office in Shanghai is said to be carrying out unusually strict inspections of exports to Japan. The ministry says Japanese companies reported delays particularly after September 19th, when Japan extended the detention of a Chinese fishing boat captain involved in the ship collisions off the Senkaku Islands. But some firms said they no longer faced such problems. The ministry plans to monitor the situation, particularly after October 8th, when China’s weeklong National Day holiday ends.
