Small Engine Repair: Replacing the Starter Pull Rope on a 500 Series Briggs & Stratton Engine

**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on Outdoor Power Equipment. Manuals can be found at the manufacturers website.** In this video I replace the starter pull cord on a Briggs & Stratton 500 series engine, which is used on a MTD Tiller. Its a vertical shaft engine, and I think it is the same engine Briggs & Stratton would label as 3.5 HP Briggs & Stratton Classic, but I am not sure. The starter pull cord size for this engine is size 4.5, and the pull cord length is 6.5 feet. The length of the cord can very slightly and it depends on the stiffness of the cord. I usually use 7 feet, but the cord I was using was stiff and will bind a little when I used 7 feet, so I shortened the cord to 6.5 feet. Tools Used: – 5/32 Socket – 3/8 Socket – Dykes – Needle Nosed Pliers – Lighter or Match
