Here is my solid brass double ended caliper showing its accuracy and ease of use and the sort of measurements it is capable of, being more accurate than the usual much larger woodturners rough double ended caliper. Ideal for small turned work as shown with my three tray hinged container from the 1980’s when I was very busy exploring and developing small turned containers and fascinated by design. Edward Pintos ‘Treen and other Wooden Bygones’ was my source for this object. Another good book perhaps less well known as souce material for turned work is ‘Handbook of Ornament’ by Franz Sales Meyer (available Dover re-print) and obviously Bergeron. Studying microscopic algae for ten years as a hobby really took me to new areas of form ie morphology. Prior to that my industrial toolmaking experience reelmaking development at Hardys and reading widely such as lots of horology broadens ones ‘mental landscape’ . Nowadays studying Chinese characters is yet more new visual input for me. An excellent book on design is ‘Invention and Evolution’ by MJFrench. copyright richard kell 2009
