Founded 1955 after the famous scientist Dr. Charles Franklin Kettering, The city incorporated in 1955 from the former Van Buren Township. Dayton’s best suburb. Points of interest are located in Kettering: Kettering Medical Center, a large hospital that operates in the heart of the city. Grandview, Southview, Sycamore Hospitals are affiliated with the hospital. Delphi Corporation, the controversial automotive parts company that filed for bankruptcy a few years back. Faculty/Staff Advisor – Leslie King, Coordinator, Rivers Institute, University of Dayton Summary: The US EPA calls the McCook Field neighborhood one of the worst contamination sites in the country. In 1989 or 1990, Trichloroethene or TCE – used by the former Chrysler plant (now the Behr Corporation) to clean automotive parts – was spilled or leaked into the ground. The TCE plume has traveled underground beneath an entire neighborhood, causing exposure through soil vapor intrusion to 400 homes, many businesses, and two schools. A study by the Ohio Department of Health in 2008 found higher than expected number of cancer cases in McCook Field associated with TCE exposure. TCE is a known carcinogen, and is also linked to permanent nerve liver and kidney damage. In 2009, the Behr VOC plume area was designated Ohios 48th Superfund Site by the US EPA, and a work plan for the investigation of the clean-up has been approved. Currently, the community is trying to get as many homes tested or re-tested, and ventilation systems inspected and repaired if needed. BVOCAL Behr VOC Area Leaders is the local community group in the McCook Field neighborhood that has worked for resident safety, information, and involvement as relates to the Behr plume.

A Tour Of Poor Dayton – Kettering & Moraine

I am traveling through Kettering, Ohio and its neighbor the city of Moraine. In the previous videos, I traveled through Kettering and showed you some of the things here in the community. Now I take you through its neighbor. The city of Moraine is a dying city! Just as Trotwood, Riverside and Dayton, the city of Moraine is hit with economic turmoil. Delphi Corporation, the controversial automotive parts company that filed for bankruptcy a few years back. General Motors Truck and Bus Facility is closing. It is located here and was about 35% of the active manufacturing jobs in the Dayton area. Now both companies are forced to take drastic measures by shutting down and putting many employees out of jobs. The city of Dayton is part of the RUST BELT. Many areas from Western New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virgina, Michigan, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, and to parts of Minnesota and Iowa are hit with this economic downfall. And it’s impact is felt across the country. Splash Moraine is a water park located nearby (I will focus on that area in later postings). Sun Watch Indian Village is located in Dayton, Ohio and is a major tourist attraction near the city of Moraine. Also watch your speed! If you are on some of the city of Moraine roads, you could be caught in a speed trap? And believe me, you don’t want a ticket.
