  1. This book is amazing! I can’t seem to put it down! I live with one of those “I’ll do it later Honey” kind of guys and as you can imagine my “honey do” list was getting out of control with my patience right behind it! I heard about this book that gives you step by step process to all the projects that seemed so difficult before. Home Depot knows me by name now and my list has been shrinking by the days! Just the feeling you get when you accomplish projects that before you had to wait for the “man” of the house or a repair man to do! Not only did this book show me how to do the projects, it gave me the ability to reach down deep & realize I could do it which may have been the biggest struggle of all. I recommend this to ANYONE who is stuck in the rut I was once in or ANYONE who plans on doing any kind of repairs or home improvements. I am now kicking myself because of all the money I have spent on repairing things because I had to call someone to come out and now I realize I could have been doing it myself the whole time! Before my house consumed me and now I can finally say I consume it! Funny how only a few weeks ago I was frustrated and irritated that our house was in my mind falling apart…now I can say I am getting ahead of things! My husband just asked me the other day why I was tearing the house up and fixing things that weren’t even broke…I said because I CAN! I think that was the best feeling of Power I have had in a really long time! Don’t say “I can’t do that” or “Call the maintenance man, something else is broke” until you read this book because you can and trust me you will!

I bought this book before I purchased my first home. I’d rented previously and took advantage of the fact that the landlord was always at my beck and call when something was broke and needed to be fixed. I realized that owning my own home would negate that practice. I had to learn to do things on my own. Norma has shown me how to stop that annoying toilet from running as well as how to install doorknobs. My realtors husband doesn’t even know how to do this! I keep this book in arms reach whenever something goes wrong. Those who are homeowners know that with ownership, there’s always something…regardless of how big or small it is that needs attention in your home. Norma includes funny stories to introduce each chapter and includes plain instructions and clear step by step information for each project that you want to tackle. This book is definitely not just for women (eventhough the title suggests as much), but for anyone that is interested in fixing things in their home on their own. Also, you must watch her show on the discovery channel. She still uses clear step by step insructions, but also gives you an estimate of how much each project will cost. I’m so motivated that I think I’m going to put up a much needed fence in my backyard in the spring!

  3. I never would have thought I could fix a leaky faucet, but I did. Chix Can Fix led the way. It’s straight foward, with clear diagrams and great tips. Norma gives you the confidence you need to want to attempt it on your own. I’m so glad I bought the book and I recommend it as a must have. It even made me laugh out loud at some of the funny situations Norma and her family have been in. (How many ‘how to’ books can do that??)

  4. The title bugged me but I got the book anyway because it was in the bargain bin and I thought it might be useful. And it could be if I could overlook the constant lame woman jokes in every paragraph.

Why does everything geared towards women have to be cute, or funny, or talk about Prada? It’s just insulting, I think. This book talks down (I just really found it stupid how she brings up needing Tequila 4 times whilst working on a toilet…).

I’m actually a pretty girly girl but I just don’t like books like this that think they have to talk to me in a cutesy voice and use pink tools to get me to do something.

The Readers Digest book of Home Repairs is FAR superior with great photos, a list of tools and simple explanations with easy to follow instructions. It’s not written for a woman, it’s not written for a man – it’s written for people who need to fix stuff and just want to know how to do it.
